Organising is part of decluttering, which is being intentional and mindful of the quality of objects you keep in your space and ensuring each item has a home. Cleaning is making sure that the things we own are hygienic. Yet these two often interplay with each other. If you have too many objects, it often leads to unhygienic areas in your home as you just can’t get to everything to clean it or you don’t have enough time to clean everything you have. Taking time once a month to declutter a cupboard or room will automatically improve the overall cleanliness of your space.
Organising Is
- Categorising: grouping similar items to make finding things and understanding what you have easier.
Assigning homes: When each object has a home (a designated spot or zone where it goes), it eliminates the “where does this go?” problem. - Using storage systems: Bins, containers, shelves, and other systems empower you to maintain a well-organised space.
- Optimising functionality: Arranging your belongings in a way that makes them easy to use.
- Maintaining clarity: ensuring your items and storage systems are visually easy to find and identify (sometimes with labels or colour coding).
- Sustainable practices: Creating systems that are easy to maintain long term, so you don’t fall back into clutter.
Essentially, organising is creating tidy and functional spaces that prevent clutter from piling up again. You’ll notice that the common themes of organising are purpose, intentionality, and sustainability.
Practical Application with the Realign Team
Garages often become dumping spots and a culmination of random items. People put things in the garage to be dealt with later, but later never comes! This leads to an “out of sight, out of mind” situation.
Unfortunately, so often items are stored poorly, so that by the time you come to sort them, they are damaged or mouldy and have to be discarded. This is why it’s so important to periodically review your space – it’s too easy to let items pile up until they become looming, intimidating mountains.
When decluttering this garage, we unpack the contents into an open space. This allows for a proper assessment and classification of everything. Following the unpacking, Debra worked with the client, sorting through everything, deciding what should stay and go, while her team wiped the garage down and sweep.
The remaining items are then grouped into like-items or categories, e.g.camping gear, beach gear, gardening supplies, laundry items, hardware, etc. Establishing these zones helps with organising a garage and maintaining the system. It also prevents it from reverting to a dumping area.
Finally, we pack back the items and label the zones so that they are user-friendly for the whole family. This will help to keep the space organised and stuff easy to find.
